Just Look at This Gorgeousness!
Do you love castles too? In my last post I shared my childhood dream of living in a castle. It isn’t a reality for me, but I am content to visit them when possible, read about them, and live vicariously through others who are actually living the dream!
One such couple is Karina and Craig, who bought Chateau Gudanes in the south of France. It was a 91 room wonder that was crumbling into ruins from years of neglect and water damage. After mounds of paperwork the couple were able to begin the labor of love on the ever-continuous process of restoration. Their dream is to authentically restore the old glory days using reclaimed materials, craftsmen, students, and artisans, and preserve its integrity so it will last for generations to come. They have been blessed by locals coming to help out - who share stories of their parents or ancestors being at the castle during former days.
I stumbled across this lovely castle when I was doing research for my book, Eyes Wide Open. When Lucie - the main character - is returning to her beloved home in France, she finds the entrance doors to her beloved home sealed with wax and string. During the French Revolution the government seized property of aristocrats, sealing the entrances so that none could enter or exit. Chateau Gudanes has a photo on Pinterest which shows the remnants of these historical seals! I was so excited to find an actual photo, as most evidence like this no longer exists.
If you enjoy reading about such ventures, I encourage you to purchase their book. It shows all that goes into making a dream become a reality.
Another such couple who bought a castle to live in is Dick and Angel Strawbridge, who you can discover through their HGTV series, “Escape to the Castle.” Filed with fun and personality, you will enjoy seeing what their life is like behind stone walls. I particularly like their large garden, which is a work in progress. There are also many YouTube channels showcasing people who have bought castle ruins who are in the process of restoring them to their former glory. They are a favorite go-to for me when I want to daydream.
What dreams do you have? Are you living vicariously through other people? Does it check the box for you?
XOXO,
Rachel
